Benefits FAQ for a new hire
Updated
Problem it solves
The benefits PDF is accurate and unreadable. A new hire needs the plain version, still checked against the plan.
Best tool
- ChatGPT (free chat)
- Claude (free chat)
- Gemini (free chat)
- Copilot (free chat)
The free chat is enough for one draft. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and the free Microsoft Copilot chat can each do this. A paid plan only helps if you hit a usage limit. Copilot inside Word, Excel, or Outlook is a separate paid Microsoft 365 feature. You do not need it to try this once.
Copy-paste prompt
Explain our employee benefits in plain English as a one-page FAQ for new hires: [paste benefits summary]
Replace every [bracket]. If you cannot fill one, delete that line.
Template
Who this is for: [new hire] Plans named in the summary: [names] Questions to answer only from the summary: - When does coverage start? - What do I pay? - Who do I ask? Leave out any number that is not in the summary.

Example output
A usable draft is a one-page FAQ in plain language. Every number, waiting period, and plan name matches the summary you pasted.
Tips
- Paste the summary, not a screenshot of someone’s enrollment with their Social Security number on it.
- This is not benefits advice. Your plan documents win if the draft disagrees.
Time saved
Estimate: a readable page takes less time to draft than to write from a blank document. Checking it against the plan is required and is not instant.
How to use it
- Copy the prompt. Copy the prompt on this page into a free chat.
- Fill every bracket. Replace each [bracket] with a fact from your own notes. If you cannot fill one, delete that line instead of guessing.
- Edit before you use it. Have the person who administers benefits read it. Delete any sentence the summary does not support.
