Product descriptions for what you sell
Updated
Problem it solves
The shelf has a product and the website has a blank. You need a plain description, not a slogan.
Best tool
- ChatGPT (free chat)
- Claude (free chat)
- Gemini (free chat)
- Copilot (free chat)
The free chat is enough for one draft. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and the free Microsoft Copilot chat can each do this. A paid plan only helps if you hit a usage limit. Copilot inside Word, Excel, or Outlook is a separate paid Microsoft 365 feature. You do not need it to try this once.
Copy-paste prompt
Write a product description under 60 words for each item. Include the material, the size, and the price if I gave them. Do not claim "best" or a health benefit. Do not invent a detail. Shop: [name] Items: [name, material or contents, size, price, and one true detail]
Replace every [bracket]. If you cannot fill one, delete that line.
Template
[product name] [one or two sentences: what it is, material or contents, size] Price: [price] [shop name]
Download saves a .txt file. product-description.txt
Example output
A usable draft is one short paragraph per item, and a shopper could check every claim against the product in your hand.
Tips
- The retail guide suggests starting with descriptions for products you already sell. It says twenty as an example of a pile, not a result.
- If you do not know the material, leave it out. Do not guess a fabric.
Time saved
Estimate: a handful of descriptions is a short editing session. A whole catalog is as long as the catalog. This is not a measured hours-saved figure.
How to use it
- Copy the prompt. Copy the prompt on this page into a free chat.
- Fill every bracket. Replace each [bracket] with a fact from your own notes. If you cannot fill one, delete that line instead of guessing.
- Edit before you use it. Read the draft against your notes. Delete any price, date, name, or promise you did not supply. You decide what gets sent.
